FOR TUTORS

Become a tutor in the English language tutoring program!

If you are proficient in the English language, you can become a tutor—no prior tutoring or teaching experience is required. In fact, many of our volunteers are first-time tutors.

KLC will provide the resources that you need to begin tutoring, including English language textbooks and workbooks based on the student’s proficiency level.

The tutor coordinator will match you with a student based on similar weekly schedules and arrange a meeting to introduce you to each other. After this introduction, you will meet with your student for an hour each week at Kearney Public Library. You will need to communicate with your student if you are not able to attend a tutoring session.

As a tutor, you will plan what to do in the tutoring session each week, either taking lessons directly from the textbook or creating your own lessons and activities based on what your student needs. For example, a student who started a new job in a retail store may need help quickly learning new vocabulary related to clothing or other items sold there. Tutors may also choose to divide the tutoring time into reading/writing based on the lessons and activities as well as casual verbal conversation to help the student practice speaking in English.

To become a tutor, you will need to fill out an application form at the front desk of Kearney Public Library. Or, you can download, print, and complete the form and then drop it off at the library.
